How to Photograph Your Cup

A good photo means a better reading. Here is what I need to see.

Example 1

Example 1

A clear top-down photo of coffee grounds after draining. The patterns are well-defined and the cup interior is fully visible.

Example 2

Example 2

Tea leaves photographed from above with good lighting. The shapes cling to the walls and bottom, creating readable patterns.

Tips for the Best Photo

  • Hold the camera directly above the cup, looking straight down — not at an angle.
  • Use a plain white or light-colored cup so the patterns stand out.
  • Good lighting makes all the difference — natural daylight is best, avoid harsh shadows.
  • Let the grounds or leaves dry slightly after draining so the shapes are crisp, not runny.
  • Make sure the whole interior of the cup is in the frame — don't crop too tightly.
  • Avoid cups with printed patterns or designs inside — they confuse the reading.
