The Art of Tasseography
A comprehensive guide to reading coffee grounds and tea leaves — from ancient origins to modern practice.
History & Origins
Tasseography (also known as tasseomancy or tassology) is the art of interpreting patterns in tea leaves, coffee grounds, and wine sediments. The word derives from the French tasse (cup) and the Greek -graph(writing) — literally, "cup writing."
The practice has roots stretching back to ancient China, where monks would read the patterns inside their tea bowls. It spread through the Middle East with the rise of coffee culture in the Ottoman Empire, where Turkish coffee reading (fal) became — and remains — a beloved cultural tradition.
In Europe, tasseography became popular in the 17th century as tea drinking spread from Asia. It was particularly embraced in Victorian England, where parlor readings became a fashionable social activity. Scottish and Irish traditions also developed their own rich reading practices.
Today, tasseography is practiced worldwide — from Greek kafemandeia to Armenian coffee fortune telling — each culture adding its own layer of symbolism and ritual to this ancient art.
How to Prepare a Reading
Brew & Drink
Use loose-leaf tea or Turkish/Greek-style unfiltered coffee. Drink slowly and mindfully, focusing on a question or intention. Leave a small amount of liquid in the cup.
Swirl & Invert
With your left hand, swirl the cup three times clockwise. Then quickly turn the cup upside down onto the saucer. Wait a minute for the liquid to drain and the grounds to settle.
Photograph
Turn the cup right-side up. The patterns left by the grounds or leaves are your reading. Photograph the cup from directly above — good lighting and a clear view of the interior are key.

Bottom

Tips for Better Readings
- ✦Trust your intuition. The first shape you see is often the most important. Don't overthink it.
- ✦Context matters. A snake near a heart has a different meaning than a snake near a door. Consider how symbols relate to each other.
- ✦Size indicates importance. Larger symbols carry more weight in the reading than smaller ones.
- ✦Clarity matters. A clear, well-defined symbol is a stronger message than a vague or partial one.
- ✦Light vs. dark areas. Light, open areas in the cup represent positive energy and clarity. Dense, dark clusters may indicate challenges or heaviness.
